The Companies of the western world are facing a massive brain-drain as senior
employees leave companies for retirement. This problem has been made worse by
the fact that many companies have reduced their staffing levels by opening for
early retirement and recruiting lightly. As a result, young staff today will
often lack the «mentors» to coach them. The general trend has been
a lowering of retirement age. As a result, many highly skilled professionals
find themselves professionally idle at an early age. The transition from fully
employed to retired can be brutal and leaves a feeling of dissatisfaction. The
retirees enjoy the luxury of freedom, are financially secure and may not want
full time employment, but seek a link back to the work sphere. Some of your
senior staff have left. The replacements have not had sufficient overlap to
pick up the tricks of the trade. Why not engage a «mentor » from the pool of
retired people. Someone with many years of practical, hard-won experience. Someone
who can help your young staff avoid repeating costly mistakes. They will probably
be retired from another company and bring other views to your organisation,
maybe challenge some established practices. Using retirees on a consultant basis
gives you full leverage of experience without the obligations of full-time employment.
